MWC 24: Deutsche Telekom presents the AI Phone, the smartphone with Artificial Intelligence

Could the concept of the Rabbit R1 and the LAM end up being the tone for the future of smartphones?

There are several companies that have opened the melon of "Artificial Intelligence Assistants" or as I like to call them, AIassistants—badúm tsss!—and after Humane and Rabbit R1, the Germans from Deutsche Telekom have presented a device without applications.

We are more than used to our smartphone being our daily helper. How do we use it? Well, one or several applications for each use that the device allows us: Order food, organize a trip, watch videos, listen to music...

But of course. To order food I can use 3 or 4 different applications. To organize a trip I have to look for accommodation in various apps, trips or tickets to museums or shows. If I want to listen to music I also have several alternatives. It's a lot of work and a lot of applications.

A virtual assistant without using applications (or almost)

At Mobile World Congress 2024, Deutsche Telekom has presented a visionary AI phone concept together with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Brain.ai. An assistant based on artificial intelligence that replaces the countless applications on the smartphone. The assistant understands your goals and takes care of the details —like you know who

Apparently, similar to R1, you can make requests to this AI Phone and the smart assistant will obey your query simply by voice command. Like this examples there are more about how an AI smartphone can make life easier when planning trips, shopping, creating videos or editing photos.

This is thanks to the Deutsche Telekom generative interface, powered by Brain.ai. Using AI, it takes over the functions of a wide range of applications and can carry out all the daily tasks that would normally require multiple applications on the device. The idea is to control everything easily and intuitively through voice and text.

Jon Abrahamson, Head of Product and Digital Officer at Deutsche Telekom, is convinced: «Artificial intelligence and Large Language Models (LLM) will soon be an integral part of mobile devices. We will use them to improve and simplify the lives of our customers. Our vision is a magenta concierge for a smartphone without apps. A true everyday companion that satisfies needs and simplifies digital life»

This underlines the Group's commitment to introducing innovations to devices already on the market and making them accessible to everyone. Together with Brain.ai, the pioneer of generative interfaces, an app-free interface is being created where AI predicts and generates the next context interface contextually, flowing with your thoughts.

Users can now focus on what they want, rather than how to get there. AI is in the cloud. On the one hand, this ensures an authentic and rewarding user experience and, on the other hand, it is accessible even on entry-level smartphones.

Deutsche Telekom commits to AI

Deutsche Telekom is also presenting another version of an AI smartphone powered by the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 Reference Design. In the high-performance device, AI processing is done on the device.

This makes AI particularly fast, energy efficient and more personalized for each user. The joint development teams of the partners are continuously working on the implementation of the concept.

At the show, partners will showcase prototypes that demonstrate a possible future and bring it to life. It looks like it's still early for them to be available to customers in the store. Deutsche Telekom invites MWC visitors to experience the future of AI in mobile technology at its stand.

As the company sets new standards and pushes the boundaries of innovation, Deutsche Telekom remains committed to reliability, privacy and security to deliver the best customer experience with AI.

At no point have they talked about the Great Action Models and the specific system with which they are going to carry it out, but it does seem that it is the way to follow in 2024. Will we reach a technology without applications?
